What is a Bilum?

A PNG bilum is more than a traditional handwoven bag. It is a powerful symbol of Papua New Guinean culture and identity. Worn and used across Papua New Guinea, regardless of province or language group, the bilum is a unifying part of everyday life.

Made using a looping technique passed down through generations, it represents women’s knowledge, strength, and connection to family, especially through the tradition of learning from mothers and grandmothers. This hand-looping method has ancient origins, practiced in Papua New Guinea long before written history.

Traditionally crafted from natural fibres sourced from the land, the bilum reflects a deep relationship with the environment and the sustainable use of natural materials. It is closely tied to caregiving and family life, most symbolically in how it carries babies safely close to the body. Used daily for carrying food, goods, and belongings, it remains both practical and meaningful.

Today, the bilum continues to embody cultural pride, resilience, and connection to land, family, and heritage, while also evolving into a modern expression of identity and craft.
