Papua New Guinea (PNG) has always been a big part of my life and identity. Spending my childhood there shaped the way I see the world. It taught me empathy, resilience and a deep respect for people and the different realities they live. I saw early on that life in PNG can hold incredible beauty alongside real hardship, and that both deserve to be acknowledged.

PNG is often misunderstood from the outside. What I know is a place rich in culture, generosity, humour and warmth, where people show up for one another and welcome you like family. It is also a place where many families face significant challenges in accessing the opportunities, resources and support that so many of us take for granted.

Bilum Haus was created to celebrate the beauty of PNG while contributing, in a small but meaningful way, to the livelihoods and wellbeing of the people behind it.

In PNG, the bilum is part of everyday life. It is carried everywhere, used constantly and woven into daily routines in a way that is both practical and deeply cultural. But behind every bilum is a woman whose hands, time, knowledge and creativity have brought it to life.

Weaving takes patience, skill and hours of work, sometimes days or even weeks. For women in rural and remote communities, this work can also provide an important source of income. Yet the time and skill that go into creating these pieces are not always reflected in the opportunities available to the women who make them.

For many families, earning a living comes with real challenges. Access to reliable income, essential services and opportunities can be limited, particularly in remote communities. When a woman is able to earn an income from her weaving, that can help support not only her own livelihood, but her children and family, too.

We believe this work deserves to be valued. Not simply because of where the bilums come from, but because of the skill, time and creativity that go into making them. By bringing these pieces to a wider audience, Bilum Haus hopes to create more opportunities for the women who weave them, while celebrating the culture and craftsmanship that make each one unique.

Every bilum is different. Some are made with natural fibres gathered from the land, others with vibrant colours and intricate patterns. Each has its own character, shaped by the materials, techniques and hands that bring it to life. These are not mass-produced accessories. They are pieces of wearable art, made with purpose, skill and a connection to the place they come from.

Our commitment to PNG extends beyond the bilums themselves. We donate 10% of every sale to Femili PNG and PNG Angels, two organisations doing important work to support people and families across Papua New Guinea. Supporting their work is one way we can contribute to the wellbeing of communities that mean so much to us.

Bilum Haus is still growing, and we recognise that we are one small part of a much bigger picture. We do not claim to solve the challenges faced by women and families across PNG. But we believe that the choices we make, the work we value and the organisations we support can all contribute to something meaningful.

At its heart, Bilum Haus is about more than carrying a bilum. It is about recognising the hands that made it, respecting the culture it comes from and understanding that something beautiful can also carry meaning beyond itself.

It is about sharing a part of PNG with the world, in a way that honours the people, celebrates their artistry and helps ensure their work is seen, valued and supported.
